Is The Americans worth watching?

Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys play married KGB spies in 1980s Washington (our rating: 8.7/10).

My review

The Americans is the spy show where the marriage is the mission. Joe Weisberg's FX series runs six seasons from 2013 to 2018, and its premise never changes: two KGB officers, Elizabeth and Philip Jennings (Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys), pose as a suburban Washington married couple while their neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) hunts Soviet illegals for the FBI. What changes is everything else, because the arranged cover marriage turns into a real one. Rotten Tomatoes' season 6 sits at 99% with a 9.3/10 average from 199 critics, the show drew 18 Emmy nominations including two Outstanding Drama Series bids, and Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor for the final season. IMDb users have it at 8.4/10 from 127,000 votes, checked October 24, 2026. This is the best marriage drama ever disguised as an espionage procedural.

Spoiler-free verdict: Essential. Six tight seasons, a perfect final run, and two lead performances that hold the Cold War and a family in the same frame. Start at season 1 and let it take its time.

What The Americans is about

The year is 1981 and the Jennings household runs on a schedule: school runs, cover identities, and evening assignments that involve killing people for the Motherland. Philip is the adaptable one, Elizabeth the ideological one, and the show's engine is the slow transfer of conviction between them. Their FBI neighbor Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) unknowingly conducts the cat-and-mouse at the center of the series, while Margo Martindale's Claudia, their KGB handler, keeps the pressure on from above. Costa Ronin's Oleg Burov enters later as a Soviet intelligence officer whose loyalties complicate the board.

Created by Joe Weisberg, a former CIA officer, the series adapts the era with period-accurate tradecraft: wigs, dead drops, and assignments that get harder to justify each season. It ran 75 episodes across six seasons, ending in May 2018.

Cast and performances

Russell and Rhys are the finest double act of 2010s television, and the Emmys eventually agreed. Each was nominated for Lead Actor or Actress in the last three seasons, and Rhys took the award for season 6. Russell plays Elizabeth as a woman whose belief has cost her everything she was allowed to want; Rhys plays Philip as a man who took the job seriously and the marriage accidentally. Around them: Noah Emmerich's Stan as the most sympathetic FBI man on television, Margo Martindale's handler as pure bureaucratic menace, and Costa Ronin's Oleg bringing moral weight to the opposition.

What works

The long game. The Americans is built as a five-year plan, and the reward for patience is a series where small gestures carry seasons of freight: a record player, a confession in a car, a look across a kitchen. RT critics scored season 3 at 100% and season 4 at 99%, and the final season's 99% came with a consensus that named the trick: the show "pumps up the volume on an already intense show, concluding the complex series arc with epic familial conflict and a high body count." The 1980s Washington detail is lived-in rather than nostalgic, and the show treats both sides of the Iron Curtain as systems that use their people.

What doesn't

The middle seasons ask for commitment the format rarely demands: the series was a modest ratings performer throughout, and season 5, where the pace deliberately slows for the illegals' home front, draws the most viewer complaints. Some supporting plots, particularly around the Jennings children, run thinner than the central triangle. It is a show about adults thinking, and a viewer looking for weekly action machinery will find the tempo cold at first.

What audiences say

The audience verdict hardened late and hard. IMDb holds 8.4/10 from 127,000 votes, and the finale is repeatedly called one of the best ever filmed in long-run viewer threads, with the recurring note that the last episode justifies every slow turn before it. Emmy history tracks the critical arc: 18 nominations across the run, with the later seasons finally rewarded after years of what commentators called snubs. TMDB has it at 7.9 from 1,130 votes, checked October 24, 2026.

Where to watch The Americans

All six seasons stream on Hulu in the US, with purchase options on Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Google Play Movies, and Fandango At Home, checked on October 24, 2026. Episode guides and the full season record live at The Americans streaming options and member reviews. If the Cold War tradecraft drew you in, Slow Horses updates the British side of the same craft, and Homeland runs the CIA's later wars.

Verdict

Is The Americans worth watching? Yes, and it belongs in the same conversation as the great American dramas. The finale lands, the six-season arc has no padding to skip, and Russell and Rhys turn a spy premise into the best on-screen marriage of its decade. This is what prestige television was for.

Rating: 8.7/10 (IMDb 8.4/10, Rotten Tomatoes 99% for season 6, TMDB 7.9/10; evidence-weighted, checked October 24, 2026)

Spoiler warning: the ending of The Americans

The finale strips the operation bare. The Jennings escape plan activates, Philip and Elizabeth's children learn what their parents are in the worst possible way, and Stan Beeman confronts the evidence of years in a parking garage that plays as the show's quietly devastating centerpiece. Elizabeth and Philip ride out of Washington as themselves, married for real in a cover that outlasted the country they served, and the camera holds on them in a train compartment with no mission left. Stan never gets a clean answer. That is the point.
