About Extramovies

Extramovies is an independent film-review magazine. Every review here is criticism written for this site, with our own rating, our own verdict, and the date we checked where the film can be watched. We write about films and point you at the services that carry them.

What Extramovies publishes

Three kinds of page, and they do not blur into each other.

Editorial reviews

Long-form criticism with one rating out of ten, a one-line verdict, the runtime, the director, the credits and the date the review went up. The rating is ours and the argument is ours. The review archive lists every one of them, newest first.

Title hubs

Every film we have reviewed gets a page of its own: the full credit list, where it can be streamed, rented or bought, and what readers wrote about it. The hub is where you check availability. The review is where you read the argument.

Member reviews

Signed-in readers can write a short review and a score for a film on its hub. A member review carries the reader's name and the reader's own number, and it stays separate from ours. Readers can report a member review, and a reported review is pulled for review instead of staying up.

How the rating works

One number out of ten, and it has to be earned by the review it belongs to.

Every editorial review carries a single rating out of ten. The editor sets it once the criticism is written, and the score has to match the argument: a thin review does not get a high number, and a good review does not get a low number because a score somewhere else said so.

We do not publish an average of other people's scores as our rating, and we do not copy one into it. Member scores sit on the film's page and are never added into ours.

A review cannot go live without a score. Nothing publishes unfinished, so every review in the archive carries a number.

How films get picked

The editor chooses the titles, and nothing goes up until the writing and the number are both done.

A film gets reviewed when there is something in it worth arguing about. The editor picks the title, writes or commissions the criticism, and sets the score. Only then does the review publish, and it lands in the archive in the order it was published.

Where to watch

Legal services only, and the date we checked them.

Each review carries a where-to-watch block with the services that actually carry the film: what you can watch free, what you can stream, and what you can rent or buy. The block names the region it was checked in and the date it was checked, because availability moves and rights change. Where the editor picked a link, the row says so. Where a paid link earns us a commission, the block says that too.

Editorial standards

The rules this site runs on.

We write our own criticism
Every review is argued from the film itself. A score never comes from an aggregate, and a verdict never comes from another outlet.
We never link to piracy or download pages
The only outbound links in a review are legal services and the film's TMDB record. An editor-picked link is marked as one, and a paid link that earns a commission says so.
We correct mistakes and say so
A wrong fact, a wrong credit or a score that does not match its own review gets fixed in the review, and the review says it was corrected.
Availability is re-checked and dated
Every where-to-watch block carries the region and the date it was checked. A stale service gets corrected when a reader tells us.
Reviews are not paid for
No review, rating or verdict has been bought, and no review here is an advertisement. Where a service link earns a commission, the watch block says so.
Spoilers sit behind a gate
Anything about the ending stays behind a spoiler warning until you open it, so a reader who has not seen the film can stop there.
Film facts come from TMDB
Credits, runtime, release date and artwork come from the film's TMDB record, and every review links to the record it used.
