Matchbox the Movie (2026)

Our verdict — 24 percent Tomatometer, fun stunts, thin script. Our Matchbox the Movie review: where to watch on Apple TV+, and the stream or skip verdict.

My review

Stream it or skip it? Stream it, but only on a couch and only with family expectations. Matchbox the Movie hands Extraction director Sam Hargrave a Mattel brand, John Cena, and 127 minutes, and the result splits cleanly down the middle: genuinely fun action wrapped around a story that exists to sell die cast cars.

Cena plays Sean, a CIA man who drags his childhood friends into a warhead chase. Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, and Teyonah Parris supply civilian panic while Danai Gurira and Golshifteh Farahani add class the script does not earn. Nell Minow at RogerEbert.com gave it three stars for spirit and sweetness, the friendliest major verdict it got. Variety, the Guardian, and the Times found it loud, familiar, and hollow. All of these readings are true at once, which is why the audience scores sit in the middle: 49 percent popcornmeter, about 5.7 on IMDb, 2.34 out of 5 on Letterboxd, against a 24 percent Tomatometer.

What works

Hargrave's set pieces. Desert chases, stairwell gunfights, helicopter work: muscular, legible, often practical. The film understands one thing well, that a child playing with toy cars is imagining exactly this kind of chaos, and the café scene that says so is its sweetest minute. Cena's goofy sincerity carries scenes that would sink with a colder lead. Kids will have a blast.

What doesn't

Everything around the action. The childhood bond plays as exposition, the humor recycles genre gags, Cena gets stuck playing straight man which wastes his best skill, and the brand messaging never stops winking. Decider's verdict was Skip It, calling it tolerably brainless escapism ruined by shameless brand promotion. At over two hours it runs about 20 minutes long.

Where to watch Matchbox

There is exactly one answer: Apple TV+, where it started streaming October 9. No theatres, no rental maze. That simplicity is the film's best feature. It is the rare case where the verdict and the viewing guide agree: this is a streaming movie, so stream it.

Verdict

A solid Saturday afternoon timepass for families, a skip for anyone allergic to brand cinema. The numbers agree with that sentence: critics at 24 percent, audiences near the middle, nobody passionate on either side.
