Is The Night Agent worth watching?
Beach-read plotting, escalating set pieces, and Gabriel Basso growing into the lead (our rating: 7.7/10).
My review
Watch The Night Agent for the momentum, not the nuance. Shawn Ryan's Netflix series is the streamer's answer to the Jack Ryan playbook: a low-level government man, a conspiracy that reaches the Oval Office, and season after season of escalating chase machinery. Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland, the FBI agent who mans the night action phone in the White House basement, and three seasons in he has grown from blank functionary into the show's steadiest asset. Rotten Tomatoes has the series at 82% overall, and the audience keeps showing up: this is one of Netflix's most-watched dramas of 2023 and it has not slowed down since.
Spoiler-free verdict: Fast, watchable, and honest about what it is. The Night Agent is comfort-food espionage with real action craft. Season 3 is the show's sharpest run yet.
What The Night Agent is about
The premise comes from Matthew Quirk's novel. Peter Sutherland works a phone that never rings, until the night it does, and the caller (Genesis Rodriguez's Rose Larkin, a cybersecurity expert whose aunt and uncle are killed) pulls him into a conspiracy that reaches the president's inner circle. Creator Shawn Ryan, who built The Shield, runs the show like a procedural engine: every season gets a new city, a new mole, and a new layer above the last one.
Season 1 dropped in March 2023, season 2 arrived in January 2025, and season 3 premiered on February 19, 2026, moving the action to Asia and the show's most praised cast yet. Netflix has already filmed ahead: TMDB lists a fourth season in production, and the show's numbers justify it.
Cast and performances
Basso is the load-bearing wall. He plays Peter as a man trained to trust process, which makes his slow acceptance of off-book logic the show's real character arc. Fola Evans-Akingbola's CIA officer Chelsea Arrington runs the season 3 field operations with an authority the show previously lacked, and critics noticed: writing at But Why Tho? called season 3 "arguably the best" of the series, crediting "the best ensemble of new supporting players for the show to date."
What works
The set pieces. Season 3's rooftop and convoy work was shot with the kind of coverage that lets geography read, and Brian Tallerico, reviewing season 3 for RogerEbert.com, put it plainly: "Gabriel Basso's action thriller isn't a hit by accident. And in Season 3, it's firing on all cylinders." Ryan's writer's room also understands the value of a clean machine: subplots connect, payoffs land on schedule, and no episode ends without a reason to start the next one.
What doesn't
The dialogue trades in functional exchanges, and side characters exist to hand Peter his next address. Rotten Tomatoes' original season 1 consensus still fits the writing more than the action does: "Bingeable as a beach read and just as forgettable, The Night Agent is a routine spy thriller told with commendable bravado." Season 3's detour away from the compromised-president story of season 2 drew its own complaints, with reviewers arguing the show softens its stakes when it resets the board.
What audiences say
The gap between critics and viewers is the story. Rotten Tomatoes' audience score sits at 67%, under the 82% critics figure, and the split runs through every season: crowd-pleasers grade it as addictive television, skeptics call the plotting recycled. The RT audience reviews that hold up are the honest ones: this is a show people put on at 11 p.m. and finish at 3 a.m. TMDB has it at 7.7 from 1,294 votes, checked October 24, 2026.
Where to watch The Night Agent
All three seasons stream on Netflix in the US, with Netflix Standard with Ads as the cheaper tier, checked on October 24, 2026. Season 4 has no release date yet. For the rest of the show's profile and episode guide, see The Night Agent streaming options and member reviews. If the White House basement premise grabbed you, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan runs the same globe-trotting agency machine with a bigger budget.
Verdict
Is The Night Agent worth watching? Yes, with the right expectations. This is not the cerebral end of the genre; the CIA tradecraft is decorative and the romance beats are formula. What it delivers is pace, clean action staging, and a lead who improves every season. Start with season 1, and if the finale of season 3 leaves you cold, the upgrade from beach read to actual thriller happens right after.
Rating: 7.7/10 (IMDb 7.4/10, Rotten Tomatoes 82%, TMDB 7.7/10; evidence-weighted, checked October 24, 2026)
