Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do worth watching?

Skip it. Mudassar Aziz's comedy has a fine cast in a good city and a script that keeps losing the thread (our rating: 4.5/10).

My review

No, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is not worth watching. Mudassar Aziz has a good idea, a good cast and a good city, and the film's own machinery eats all three. A forest officer in Prayagraj pretends to be the boyfriend of the woman a local politician's son is dating, and the joke then runs for 117 minutes without a punchline. Rotten Tomatoes, checked on October 22, 2026, has it at 17 percent from 12 reviews. Our rating is 4.5 out of 10.

Spoiler-free verdict: Skip it. A 117-minute Hindi comedy with Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh and Sara Ali Khan, set in the lanes of Prayagraj, and built on a misunderstanding that the screenplay never bothers to tighten. Rotten Tomatoes had it at 17 percent from 12 reviews when we checked on October 22, 2026. You need no plot summary before pressing play.

What Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is about

Prajapati Pandey (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a forest department officer in Prayagraj with a tidy marriage to Aparna (Wamiqa Gabbi) and a plan to capture a wild wolf. His wife reports that a politician's son is dating a Muslim woman, and the report turns into a scandal that both Gajraj Tiwari (Tigmanshu Dhulia), the politician it belongs to, and Aparna want settled. Chanchal (Sara Ali Khan) is the woman in question and also Prajapati's old friend from Benaras. She wore the head covering to hide from goons, and Prajapati agrees to pose as her boyfriend to keep Gajraj off her.

Nilofer (Rakul Preet Singh) is Prajapati's colleague and Aparna's friend, and she is the one who bails him out when the police raid a hotel the pair were using as a cover. The trouble is that she also tells him she will report his behaviour to his wife, so every attempt to explain the situation makes it worse.

Cast and performances

Khurrana does the film's physical work with a bright, dumb panic that the camera keeps catching at the right second. Gabbi plays Aparna with a short fuse and a real ear for when her husband is lying, and the film is better whenever the two of them are in a room together. Sara Ali Khan gets the film's most physical comedy, including a run through a hotel that goes wrong in every possible way.

Rakul Preet Singh is the most interesting thing in the picture and the least used. Nilofer is sharp, complicit and the only person who understands what Prajapati is doing, and the screenplay gives her a function in the plot rather than a part in it. Vijay Raaz and Ayesha Raza Mishra get the elder-generation comedy, and Tigmanshu Dhulia plays the politician as a man who is mostly worried about the election.

What works

Prayagraj. The Free Press Journal's Troy Ribeiro noticed the thing that the film does better than its plot: "Visually, the film embraces colour, bustle, and small-town flamboyance. Prayagraj is presented with affectionate theatricality, while the production design supports the film's larger-than-life comic temperament." The narrow lanes, the election posters and the festival colours are a genuine pleasure to look at.

The chase mechanics. The film puts a wolf and a duty officer in the same city, and every scene that puts them in the same frame is funny in a way the rest of the plot is not.

What doesn't

The premise. CNN-News18's Titas Chowdhury gave the film three and a half stars and found that "on its own eccentric terms, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do largely succeeds in being delightfully entertaining, massy and frothy", which is the most generous reading available. The Hindu's Anuj Kumar was blunter about the mechanism: "By keeping the protagonist innocent and merely a victim of circumstances, the film dilutes its own conflict, resulting in a safe, ultimately forgettable comedy."

The length. Livemint's Udita Jhunjhunwala led with the film's only structural defence: "Mercifully, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is only 117 minutes long. But it remains curiously disengaged from the people inside its farce." Rediff's Sreeju Sudhakaran gave it two stars and asked what the plot has to offer: "The plot may have itself to offer little novelty." The Times of India's Dhaval Roy also gave it two and a half and headed his review "A Messy Comedy That Gets Tangled In Its Own Confusion", adding that "despite its promising premise and capable performers, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do gets too tangled in its own confusion to deliver consistent laughs".

The excess. Upper Stall's Dipankar Sarkar had the sharpest line of the night: "Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is ultimately a film that mistakes exaggeration for entertainment, ending up as a bloated spectacle of mistaken identities and diminishing returns and little more."

What audiences say

All figures checked on October 22, 2026. Rotten Tomatoes has the film at 17 percent from 12 critic reviews, and no Popcornmeter score yet, with fewer than 50 verified ratings. Metacritic has no page for the film. Letterboxd's member average is a weighted 2.31 from 3,777 ratings, with 4,624 members having watched it and 453 liking it. TMDB has it at 5.9 from 21 votes. We do not quote IMDb here, because the site blocks our checks.

Three numbers saying the same thing. A 17 percent Tomatometer, a 2.31 on Letterboxd and a 4.5 from us: the audience for a comedy this crowded found it thin, and the critics agreed.

Verdict

Is Pati Patni Aur Woh Do worth watching? No. There is a good film in the materials: a fine comic actor, a sharp comic actress in Rakul Preet Singh, a city shot with affection, and a wolf. What the film does with them is stack mistake on top of mistake until the audience cannot find the floor. Titas Chowdhury's three and a half stars is the score this deserves at its most generous, and the 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes is the score it earned. Four and a half out of 10.

Spoiler warning: the ending of Pati Patni Aur Woh Do

The four of them are held at Gajraj Tiwari's farmhouse while the politician tries to raise his runaway son on the phone. Sunny is not in the farmhouse at all. He is at the airport, waiting to run away with Chanchal, and the farmhouse is next to a forest. Prajapati starts making the noise he has been trained to make for a rogue wolf, the animal walks out of the trees, the handlers arrive to do their job, and the confusion of that rescue is the only thing that gets Prajapati and Chanchal out of the house and to the airport before Gajraj can stop them.

Gajraj arrives to stop Sunny from leaving and relents once Prajapati threatens to damage his reputation, and Chanchal thanks Prajapati for putting the lovers back together. Aparna apologises to her husband for believing he was unfaithful. The film's last joke is the one it set up at the start: the duty officer and the wolf are still on the same payroll, and the plan survives.
