Jailer 2 (2026)

Our verdict — Superb first half, saggy second, Rajini ever commanding. Critics split 2.5 to 3.5, fans louder. Our Jailer 2 review with box office and verdict.

My review

Go for the theatre, not the plot. Jailer 2 is a three hour celebration built around a 75 year old superstar, and Nelson directs it like he knows exactly why the crowd showed up. Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian two months after the first film's events, and the sequel surrounds him with S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, and Vidya Balan, with Anirudh Ravichander's score doing half the heavy lifting.

The first half fires on every cylinder. The opening twenty minutes drag, then Yogi Babu's entry wakes the film up: tea stall scenes, the bridge sequence, and an interval block fans are already calling the high point. Rajini's restraint reads as command rather than fatigue, and Namo Narayana as Moorthi steals nearly every scene he walks into. The Hindu's review landed in the same place, calling it a smooth and entertaining ride.

What works

Ensemble energy and elevation staging. Suryah brings genuine menace to the family villain thread, Suraj holds his own against the superstar, and Anirudh's album papers over thin stretches. The Baasha references and the Kaavaalaa connect reward longtime fans, and the Hrithik Roshan and Mohanlal cameos land even if they stay brief.

What doesn't

The second half sags and the climax underwhelms. A birthday party sequence set in Goa dies on screen, two item numbers stall momentum, Vidya Balan gets criminally little to do, and at 163 minutes the film asks for patience it does not always repay. Critic scores sit between 2.5 and 3.5 out of 5 for exactly this reason.

What audiences say

Opening day split down the middle. One half of X calls the first half highly engaging and the sequel curse broken, rating it 4 out of 5. The other half calls it dead slow and disappointing. A widely shared Reddit review settled at 3 out of 5: solid first half, draggy second, weak villains beyond Suryah and Suraj, okayish Anirudh, forgettable cameos. IMDb had no weighted rating at the time of writing, which tells you how early this verdict still is.

Verdict

Is Jailer 2 worth watching? In a packed theatre with fans, yes, and that is the only way to see it. It will not convert skeptics of the mass formula. Day one put up roughly 29.4 crore net in India, which tells you the verdict the crowd already delivered, and the film ends with a clear hint at Jailer 3.

Rating: 7.0/10 (SAMPLE, owner adjusts)
